Algebra, patterns, and coordinate graphs

5th grade math Unit #7

In 5th Grade, students will...

  • Simplify an expression using the Order of Operations.

  • Interpret expressions without simplifying them.

  • Identify relationships between corresponding terms in two patters.

  • Represent points in a coordinate plane.

Unit 7

Lesson 7.1

Read and Write Epressions

Objective: We will read and write expressions.

CONGRATULATIONS!

You can take your Emodo quiz and go on to the next lesson!

Vocabulary:

Practice:

When you read and write an expression, make sure that you keep in mind the order of operations.

One way to remember the order of operations is with the saying:

Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally

If you take the first letter of each of the words it will spell out the order that the world uses to know what operation to do first.

P = Parenthesis                                            6 x (y + 2)

E = Exponents

M = Multiplication                                       32 / (6 - 4)

D = Division

A = Addition                                                Four plus three times 7

S = Subtraction

Lesson 7.2

Simplify Epressions

Objective: We will simpify numerical expressions.

Vocabulary:

Practice:

10 x (0.3 + 0.2)

21 - 12 + 9 - 2

18 + 9 / 0.1

Lesson 7.3

Evaluate Epressions

Objective: We will write and evaluate expressions with variables.

Vocabulary:

Practice:

To evaluate an expression, substitute a value for the variable and then use the Order of Operations to simplify.

Evaluate 5 x (p - 2) for p = 10.

5 x ( p - 2 ) = 5 x (10 - 2 )  Substitute 10 for p

                 = 5 x 8            Subtract insides parentheses

                 = 40               Multiply

m- 4.7 for m=10               5 + n x 4 for n = 3              7.5 x (d - 2.5) for d = 3.5

Patterns and Relationships

Objective: We will generate and extend numberical patterns and identify relationships of corresponding terms.

Vocabulary:

Practice:

Look at the following pattern and find the rule and the next term.

3 , 5 , 7 , 9 , 11 ...

3, 3+2, 3+2+2, 3+2+2+2, 3+2+2+2+2 ...
