Lesson 6.8

Equations and Parentheses

Objective: I will solve two-step problems.

 1. Parentheses show us what part of the problem to do first .

Write parentheses in the following equations to make them true:

                 9 - 6 Ã· 3 = 1                                             4 x 2 + 1 = 12

                 9 - 6 Ã· 3 = 7                                             4 x 2 + 1 = 9

                20 Ã· 5 + 5 = 2                                           16 - 8 x 2 = 0

                20 Ã· 5 + 5 = 9                                           16 - 8 x 2 = 16

 2. When analyzing a 2-step problem, use parentheses to show which step you are doing first

Write and solve an equation for the following word problem:

A suburban shopping mall has 105 rows of parking spaces with 45 spaces in each row. A special permit is required to park in 630 of those spaces.  How many spaces do not require a special permit?

 3. Watch out for sneaky questions that will give you too much information, or not enough information. Make sure that you are thinking through the questions carefully!

1. Multistep Problems: problems whose solutions involve more than two steps.  Remind students that in any multisept problem, more than one operation will usually be present, and the order in which those operations are performed is important.

Write and solve an equation for the following problem:

An inventor purchased 150 shares of stock at $13.60 per share, and sold the shares later for $11.92 per share. Calculate the profit of loss of the transaction.
